Personal Opinion PM Modi’s strong commitment June 17, 2020 by Manish Gurjar The Prime Minister struck the right note in his initial remarks on the unfortunate killing of a number of Indian soldiers in combat with personnel of the Chinese armed forces in Galwan Valley, eastern Ladakh. He assured the nation that the sacrifice of their lives by Indian soldiers will not go in vain, and that India would defend its self-respect and every inch of its territory. At the same time, he told the world that India is committed to peace but prepared and capable of defending its interests. Working towards providing basic necessities in life to everyone is another value that is close to my heart. These aforementioned values have strong foundations in the tenets of liberty, equality and justice, vital to ensuring a life of dignity and contentment to all. My commitment to these values will forever remain unwavering. India is a democracy, where people’s sentiments matter and have to be respected. China must appreciate this, and not make the mistake of thinking that political leaders have untrammelled capacity to look over the dead bodies of the nation’s soldiers to a calculus of larger costs and benefits. It is in China’s interest, apart from India’s and the world’s, for the India-China border to remain peaceful.

Personal Opinion The Galwan Valley India-China Skirmish Is a Gamechanger for New Delhi June 18, 2020 Leave a comment by Manish Gurjar The killing of 20 Indian army men at the Galwan river confrontation on June 16 is a gamechanger in India’s national security and foreign policy strategy. For more than a month now, Indian and Chinese military forces have been engaged in a border stand-off in Ladakh on the western sector of the Sino-Indian border. For The killing of 20 Indian army men at the Galwan river confrontation on June 16 is a gamechanger in India’s national security and foreign policy strategy. For more than a month now, Indian and Chinese military forces have been engaged in a border stand-off in Ladakh on the western sector of the Sino-Indian border. For 45 years, India and China took pride in the fact that there had been no fatalities on the Line of Actual Control (LAC), and that there had been peace and tranquility to a reasonable extent, despite occasional flare ups. That changed with this violent clash in which the dead included the commanding officer of the battalion. This changes the dynamics in India-China relations for the worse. As Ashley Tellis commented perceptively: “Sino-Indian relations can never go back to the old normal. They will reset with greater competitiveness and in ways that neither country had actually intended at the beginning of this crisis.” Democracy is vital to provide a responsive administration to the people. Democracy comes alive only with wide, informed and active participation of the people. My commitment to democratic decision making rests upon the realization of these facts. There will be pressure on the Indian government to not go back to business as usual after this. New Delhi may also not be able to afford to continue its ambivalent and uncommitted foreign policy approach, generally characterized as “hedging.”  India’s attempts at straddling multiple camps is likely to come under pressure. India has shown growing commitment to groupings such as the Quad, which has now been upgraded to ministerial level engagements. At the same time though, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also made efforts to engage again with the Non-Alignment Movement (NAM), attending a virtual summit in early May. This was the first time he attended a NAM summit, a group he has largely ignored for years. Although India has emphasized its role in the Russia-India-China (RIC) and the Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa (BRICS) groupings, there are likely to be questions raised about the utility of groups that are largely run according to Beijing’s wishes and which are unlikely to contribute much value to New Delhi. On the clashes itself, there is still confusion about what happened over the last couple of days, except about the fatalities on the Indian side. There is an even a bigger question about the rationale behind China’s provocative actions. Both the Indian Army and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) have issued statements. The MEA stated that subsequent to “a productive meeting on 6th June 2020” wherein a process for de-escalation was agreed upon by the two sides, there were additional meetings of  ground commanders “to implement consensus to respect the Line of Actual Control in the Galwan Valley.” The MEA spokesperson also added that “our expectation [was] that this [the de-escalation process] would unfold smoothly, [but] the Chinese side departed from the consensus to respect the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Galwan Valley.” On a phone call with the Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi this afternoon, India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar claimed to have categorically stated that “this unprecedented development will have a serious impact on the bilateral relationship.” He further called on China “to reassess its actions and take corrective steps.” The Chinese readout was very different, with Wang reportedly telling Jaishankar that India must investigate and “severely” punish those responsible and ensure that such incidents do not happen again. “The Indian side must not misjudge the current situation and must not underestimate China’s firm will to safeguard territorial sovereignty.” India-China flare ups have seen an uptick since Xi Jinping came into office in 2012. Repeated border incidents – Depsang (2013), Chumar (2014), and Doklam (2017) – had already strained the relationship, but they pale in comparison to the current border crisis. Following the downturn after the Doklam, the two sides attempted to build greater confidence in each other and build a certain amount of predictability in order to manage crises through informal summits like the ones in Wuhan and Mamallapuram. This time around, it is probably fair to say that no “Wuhan spirit” can salvage bilateral relations.   There has not been much cooperation in bilateral security relations to start with (except for some limited-scale military-to-military exercises) but economic relations between India and China are deep. Driven by market factors, China had made some gains in the power, infrastructure and telecom sector but that could come to a grinding halt. However, the biggest loser is possibly China’s Huawei in its efforts to enter the Indian 5G market. Even as there was skepticism about the company and its links to Chinese intelligence, there was a chance that China would be given a fair opportunity in the Indian 5G market, but Beijing has most likely dashed that hope. India could also impose additional economic costs that will further limit China’s entry into the Indian market, though this will hurt both sides.   There will be pressure on India to recalibrate its strategic engagements. If China thought that putting pressure on India for building closer ties with the United States, Australia and Japan was going to work, it has rebounded badly. The Galwan crisis will likely push India to build much closer strategic ties with the Quad and the Quad Plus and with the US and its allies in the Indo-Pacific.

Personal Opinion Values according to Manish Kumar Gurjar June 19, 2020 Leave a comment by Manish Gurjar While the 2014 election result was a step in the right direction, we must recognize the enormous challenges facing our country today. Even after more than 60 years of independence more than a fifth of Indians live in abject poverty, one third of the world’s malnourished children live in India, every fourth Indian is illiterate; While the 2014 election result was a step in the right direction, we must recognize the enormous challenges facing our country today. Even after more than 60 years of independence more than a fifth of Indians live in abject poverty, one third of the world’s malnourished children live in India, every fourth Indian is illiterate; in sports, we are nowhere near global powerhouses such as China, USA, Australia, etc despite having either equal or much greater population. These are all issues where young people like us can make a difference. The youth of India should step forward to maintain the momentum that was generated during the elections and use it to rapidly transform our nation by addressing these various shortcomings. I have realised that just demanding for ‘youth empowerment’ is not sufficient. It is also the responsibility of the youth to seize opportunities and contribute towards the growth and progress of our nation. John F. Kennedy once famously said “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”. It is time to take this phrase to heart. I urge upon every young person to look around them, identify issues that are of pressing concern and take the lead in solving them through creative thinking and innovation. Areas such as entrepreneurship, education, health, sports and tourism are especially ripe for energetic interventions by youth. As young people and future leaders, we should remember that all our endeavours should be guided and informed by the highest moral and ethical principles in order to uphold the trust society has placed in us. Values such as honesty, integrity, transparency, accountability and compassion coupled with hard work and determination should underpin our work I will be more than happy to extend my cooperation to initiatives by the youth directed towards transforming our society and nation. Never before in India’s history has there been such an upsurge of youth power! Never again is there likely to be such potential for economic progress and social transformation. Come! Let us join hands to better everyone’s life and make India a global superpower!

Personal Opinion Embrace teachings of Swami Vivekananda June 19, 2020 by Manish Gurjar Friends,to make a country prosperous , more than resources, we need determination, honesty and motivation to work towards the cause.   When he returned to India in 1896, immediately on reaching the shores he lay down flat on the ground and asked for the divine blessings of Mother India. It is almost akin to a child returning to the lap of his mother after a long separation. He was a very intelligent personality. Once an American Professor Dr. Wright had said “If we combine all the knowledge that men in our university claim to possess, we will then get a person with Swami Ji’s intellect.” Today, on his birth anniversary, I urge the people of Rajasthan to unite into a potent force with all your mind, spirit and resources and to pledge your untiring efforts towards the progress of Bharat Mata. This is the only way to truly honor Swami Vivekananda

Personal Opinion Vision by manish kumar June 19, 2020 by Manish Gurjar Coming from an educated background, the realization of the importance of a vision to serve the public has come naturally to me. I believe that service devoid of a vision is bound to lose impact due to a lack of direction. To serve the people of the great state of Rajasthan, it is imperative to be in tune with the aspirations of the people. I have the privilege of being constantly involved at the grassroots allowing me to interact with the people and develop an intuitive understanding of their needs as well as aspirations. The vision I am committed to is drawn from my wholesome education, regular grassroots experience and wisdom from the elders in my family who have served the people of our state before me. The key pillars of my vision for our great state are: Rajasthan’s mean annual rainfall amounts to around 496 mm with just 27 rainy days in the year. As a result, water conservation assumes a central role in ensuring water security for all. Social and economic justice cannot be protected without access to appropriate quality and sufficient quantity to this fountain of life. Rain water harvesting, reducing wastage of water, promoting recycling and re-use of water, sustainable use of ground water resources and drought management will drive my efforts towards water conservation ‘Health’, a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, is a precondition to the full realization of the human potential. Healthy populations live longer, are more productive, save more and contribute positively to the economy. Towards this end, I am committed to increased public investment in healthcare infrastructure, development of human resources in the medical field and promoting investments in the sector by private entrepreneurs to realize universal and affordable healthcare for the people of our state A philosopher once said that ‘the fastest way to change society is to mobilize the women of the world’. Women are half our population, yet there are several hurdles that stop them from realizing their full potential. They have to battle entrenched patriarchy, gender discrimination and threats to their safety every day. I firmly believe that our state will progress further only if we empower our women folk. My vision for women empowerment comprises of increased access to education for women, greater economic opportunities, and a safe and secure environment where women do not hesitate to step out to pursue social, economic and political opportunities. Sports have the potential to change the youth into self-confident, organized, and capable workforce that can transform the society and economy of our State. With 75% of our population residing in rural areas, I firmly believe that we should create infrastructure for sports in rural areas. Talent search, regular competitions at the block and panchayat levels, establishment of infrastructure (hostels, grounds, etc), increased emphasis on sports in academic curricula and sports scholarships to deserving youth in rural areas will contribute to my vision of rural sports development A democratic polity requires an informed citizenry. Education plays a vital role in fostering a healthy democratic tradition. Education based on rote learning devoid of values fails to create a well-rounded personality. Hence a school system that is founded on value based education is essential to realize the full potential of our state and nation through a well-educated citizenry

Personal Opinion Values according to Manish Kumar Gurjar June 19, 2020 Leave a comment by Manish Gurjar It is my firm belief that a healthy and holistic society cannot be created by a politics devoid of values. Politics must be motivated and driven by values and to that effect, I am committed to the values of democratic decision making, economic and social justice and transparency in all my political endeavors. We do not provoke anyone, said the Prime Minister. This is an indirect but definitive rebuttal of the Chinese characterisation of India’s action as provocative, contained in the statements issued by the spokesperson of the People’s Liberation Army and the Chinese foreign ministry. Chinese mouthpiece Global Times also blamed Indian provocation for the casualties on either side. What prompted the Chinese to violate the agreement reached between army commanders earlier this month to stick to their respective sides of the Line of Actual Control (LoAC) remains unclear. What is clear is diplomatic backing from Beijing for containing the conflict at the LoAC at the LoAC itself, without spilling over to bilateral ties. Talks are on at the level of major generals to de-escalate tensions at the Lo-AC. It is to be hoped that the talks would be fruitful and would not be derailed as the previous round of talks were. India and China must settle their differences over the border and focus on the multifarious, mutually beneficial engagements possible between the two countries, not the least of which would be production and distribution of a Covid-19 vaccine sooner rather than later. Democracy is vital to provide a responsive administration to the people. Democracy comes alive only with wide, informed and active participation of the people. My commitment to democratic decision making rests upon the realization of these facts. Gandhiji has said that poverty is the worst form of violence. Every soul lost to the violence of poverty is a blow to the moral well-being of our society. I believe poverty alleviation is a corner stone to ensuring economic justice. Fighting economic injustices such as bonded labour, distress migration, etc are also important aspects. Our society is plagued by social injustices and inequities day in and day out. Social evils like caste discrimination, gender inequality, etc impinge upon the right of an individual to live a life of dignity. Tackling these issues head on to ensure social justice is of the utmost importance to me. Corruption is a plague afflicting our nation. India and Rajasthan can set out on the path to greatness, only if corruption is eradicated. As such, society sans corruption is possible only through transparency and accountable governance. In full realization of this, transparency and accountable governance are values which I am unequivocally committed to. The availability of certain basic amenities such as water, electricity, healthcare, and welfare benefits is non-negotiable to lead a life of dignity. Ensuring access to these basic amenities, to every citizen in our state, is an article of faith for me.
